چکیده

Motivated by recent experiments, we address an ambiguity between the intrinsic in-plane spin projection of 2-dimensional surface states on 3-dimensional topological insulators and their ensemble spin polarization induced by a non-equilibrium charge current. Standard expressions from a Boltzmann equation approach in the relaxation-time approximation at zero and finite temperature are used to emphasize our assertion that despite high in-plane spin projection, obtainable currentinduced ensemble spin polarization is minuscule. The only exception is in the limit when chemical potential approaches the charge neutrality Dirac point, when the carrier density itself simultaneously vanishes.

Mapping the chemical potential dependence of current-induced spin polarization in a topological insulator

We report electrical measurements of the current-induced spin polarization of the surface current in topological insulator devices where contributions from bulk and surface conduction can be disentangled by electrical gating. The devices use a ferromagnetic tunnel junction (permalloy/Al2O3) as a spin detector on a back-gated (Bi,Sb)2Te3 channel. We observe hysteretic voltage signals as the magn...

Direct comparison of current-induced spin polarization in topological insulator Bi2Se3 and InAs Rashba states

Three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) exhibit time-reversal symmetry protected, linearly dispersing Dirac surface states with spin-momentum locking. Band bending at the TI surface may also lead to coexisting trivial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) states with parabolic energy dispersion. A bias current is expected to generate spin polarization in both systems, although with differe...

Topological insulator based spin valve devices: Evidence for spin polarized transport of spin-momentum-locked topological surface states

Spin-momentum helical locking is one of the most important properties of the nontrivial topological surface states (TSS) in 3D topological insulators (TIs). It underlies the iconic topological protection (suppressing elastic backscattering) of TSS and is foundational to many exotic physics (e.g., majorana fermions) and device applications (e.g., spintronics) predicted for TIs. Based on this spi...

Electrical detection of spin-polarized surface states conduction in (Bi(0.53)Sb(0.47))2Te3 topological insulator.

Strong spin-orbit interaction and time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators enable the spin-momentum locking for the helical surface states. To date, however, there has been little report of direct electrical spin injection/detection in topological insulator. In this Letter, we report the electrical detection of spin-polarized surface states conduction using a Co/Al2O3 ferromagnetic tunn...

Observation of current-induced, long-lived persistent spin polarization in a topological insulator: A rechargeable spin battery

Topological insulators (TIs), with their helically spin-momentum-locked topological surface states (TSSs), are considered promising for spintronics applications. Several recent experiments in TIs have demonstrated a current-induced electronic spin polarization that may be used for all-electrical spin generation and injection. We report spin potentiometric measurements in TIs that have revealed ...
